Follow-up Letter to the SVCS Community:

January 13, 2017

Dear Community,

Many of you have reached out to me over the last few weeks to express your support for the Stockbridge Valley school district, our students and our community. Thank you for your support, it is much appreciated and needed.

In my letter to the community last week, I explained how we address harassment, bullying and misconduct in school. Addressing these issues is multifaceted. The process and procedures are necessary. Lasting change comes when a culture of caring and empathy are established.

I have been very proud of our students throughout this time. I want to commend a number of students who have stepped forward and demonstrated great leadership and determination during the past few weeks. They have brought forth several ideas to promote unity in our school that they will share with the student body and the community soon.

The well-being of our students is always our first priority at school, as every student deserves to feel safe, welcomed and supported. We are lucky at SVCS to have a dedicated, caring faculty, staff, administration and board who do everything they can to support students every day. But the adults are only half of the picture. The culture that students themselves build and the friendships and peer relations they develop have a tremendous impact on our school and community climate – in the classrooms, hallways, buses, ball fields and sidewalks. With the help of our student leaders, we will continue to develop a caring school community where we support each other and encourage everyone to reach their full potential.

Rumors and misinformation have a way of spreading quickly and only serve to make the situation at hand worse. I plan to continue sharing positive, accurate information with the community in the coming weeks to keep you informed about this wonderful district. I will be using a combination of open letters like this, Twitter, Facebook and my Superintendent’s blog on our district website. I also welcome suggestions for other ways to share information and open a dialogue with the community. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with ideas.

In closing, I think we are taking steps toward improving our school culture and climate, but it will take all of us working together to accomplish this task. Thank you for your support in our efforts. Our students are exceptional and I am confident that we will move forward together.
